Time to Grow Up
It is well known among my friends of my passion for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I do not hide in bad times, say a blowout in the playoffs against New England, nor do a believe that they are a perfect organization (but close). I love my Steelers and cheer for them in the best and worst of times.
Yes, I will talk smack with friends about the other NFL teams, including the hated Vikings and Pats, and especially the villianous Ravens. Of course, you know me, I always side with the game's best franchise, Pittsburgh, which is the only team to win six Super Bowls. The Steelers are the best... just ask me.
So, it hurt a bit after reckless and bad behavior by two Steelers, players that should know better - Santonio Holmes and Ben Roethlisberger. Boys, it is time to grow up.
Roethlisberger is a two-time Super Bowl winning QB, who has ventured into dangerous territory with his brainless college behavior. Holmes, who was the 2009 Super Bowl MVP, is gone because his juvenile actions have continued. Testing positive for illegal use of drugs was the final straw. In reality, both should be gone.
Holmes had to go, given his track record. His actions were farther down the road than that of former Steeler and Giant Plaxico Burress, who never grew up and ended up in prison because of his less than brilliant behavior. Just look at the recent behavior on an airplane which resulted in his dismissal from the plane. One has to hope that Holmes can right his own ship in New York and help the Jets team. He is talented, immensely so, but you really have to wonder what direction he will take.
As for Roethlisberger, he is a quarterback and a good one. Without a doubt, he is one of the five or six best in the game. Yet, whether he recklessly drives a motorbike into a near death experience or goes clubbing and luckily avoids facing sexual assault charges, he has made several innane decisions.
Still, he deserves another chance. But in receiving that chance, he has to grows up or the Steelers, who are very displeased with their star quarterback, will send him packing. And...with good reason. He has embarrassed his family, the Steelers organization, the NFL, and himself and now finds himself on a very short leash.
If he grows up and accepts the responsibility of being an NFL player, role model and leader for the Steelers then he will be forgiven. People have big hearts and when someone falls down, there is often a hand to help them back on their feet. But, that only goes so far. If you keep falling, eventually a person ends up in a dark place.
For Roethlisberger, he will have to show a complete reversal of recent behavior. He obviously needs help with his drinking and his decision making in social situations. I hope he takes advantage of the help that is available. He needs to grow up and stop acting arrogant. And for Ben, time is running short.
If falls again, Steelers fans will not have to wait long before he is sent on his way. And, folks his pergatory could be worse than ending up in Oakland. It might be in a cell with a matrix that will be hard to configure.
