Magic of March Returns - SD Prep Girls Tourneys Open Thursday

Every March, a magic show unfolds on basketball courts across the state.

Now that the contestants of this spectacle has been revealed, it is a good bet that a few magicians will unleash their own "shining moments" when the South Dakota Girls Basketball Tournament kicks off tomorrow in three sites across the state. Already, we have been treated to a few surprises and more may be under the magician's cape which will flip up on Thursday.

Clearly, a lot of outstanding teams have made their way to the tournaments as joy has reached high stages in those towns. At the same time, a number of really talented teams are now on the sidelines and with it huge disappointment on the end of a season and for some of high school playing careers.

On the road to the big show, Class A #1 Wagner lose to Parkston, 57-54, on a shot in the final moments of the game. Northern State recruit Devan Brecke, Jessica Doom and others lose one game in 21 outings and it keeps them from going for a coveted title. Talented squads in Castlewood (17-3), Centerville (17-4), Yankton (14-7), West Central (18-4) and Tri-Valley (17-4) will be watching the games at home or in the stands of tournament host sites.

The fact is that sports aren't fair. Games we play, such as basketball, are competitive and adversarial. It is a game with a lot of skill, great coaching, disciplined play and a little lady luck.

So, what team will have the magician(s) with all the right charm? My guess is that Mitchell wins AA; St. Thomas More captures Class A while we see a repeat of Summit in Class B.

As the tournaments kick off tomorrow, here is a look at the three classes.

Class AA: Thursday, March 8 -Brookings, SD

#1 Mitchell (21-1) vs. #8 RC Central (11-12) 1 pm
