South Dakota Football vs. Northwestern and Big Ten

With the South Dakota football team set to play Northwestern at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22 in Evanston, Ill., it is worth a little time to check how the Coyotes have fared vs. the Big Ten and the Wildcats.

A quick review of the 2011 South Dakota football media guide, shows USD is 2-25 vs. the Big Ten with both wins coming on the road against Minnesota, 10-0 (Northrup Field) in 1912 and 41-38 (TCF Bank Stadium) in 2010.

While USD has just two wins, they nearly knocked off the Michigan Wolverines in 1912, The Wolverines team, coached by the legendary Fielding Yost (198-35-12 overall - 165-29-10 with six national titles at Michigan), defeated South Dakota, 7-6, at Ferry Field in Ann Arbor. The Coyotes led Michigan, 6-0, until the final seconds when the Wolverines scored a TD and added the extra point for the win.

USD's Big Ten record does not includes games vs. Nebraska (1-14-2) or Michigan State (0-5-1) because the Huskers and Spartans were not Big Ten members when the Coyotes played them. South Dakota's last game vs. MSU (20-6 loss) was in 1932 and vs. Nebraska (56-0) was in 1964. Michigan State did not join the Big Ten until 1949 and Nebraska was added in 2010.

Overall vs the Big Ten, South Dakota has the following records: 0-2 vs. Illinois, 0-2 vs. Wisconsin, 2-8 vs. Minnesota, 0-8 vs. Iowa, 0-1 vs. Michigan and 0-4 vs. Northwestern. South Dakota has not played Indiana, Penn State, Ohio State or Purdue.

Counting Nebraska and Michigan State, South Dakota's record is 3-44-4 vs. active Big Ten members. SD defeated Nebraska, 6-5, in 1899 at Dakota Field in Vermillion. In 1916, USD hosted Michigan State on Dakota Day with the game resulting in a 3-3 tie.

As for games with Northwestern, the Coyotes lost 28-0 in 1924, 14-7 in 1925, 34-0 in 1926 and 47-2 in 1927. All four games were season openers for Northwestern.

The 1924-26 Northwestern teams were coached by Glenn Thistlethwaite (21-17-1 at Northwestern), who led the Wildcats to a tie for the Big Ten crown in 1926 (7-1 overall, 5-1 in Big Ten).

Thistlethwaite left Evanston after 1926 to coach at Wisconsin (26-16-3). He was 116-70-14 overall in his coaching career.

In 1927, both Northwestern and USD hired new coaches. At NU, Richard "Dick" Hanley took over, guiding the team to a 4-4 record. Hanley was 36-26-4 overall at NU, compiling the third most wins (tied with Ara Paraseghian) in NU history. He led his team to shares of the Big Ten crown in 1930 and 1931.

At USD, Vince Montgomery took over the helm from L.B. Allison and led South Dakota to a 7-2 record and won the NCC for the first time. The team's only two losses that season were to Northwestern, 47-2, and Tulsa, 33-12. The Coyotes, which finished the season on a four-game winning streak, were unbeaten in NCC play at 5-0, including a season-ending 16-12 win over South Dakota State.
